Mantles

ABBS specializes in vintage hand hewn mantles. Each mantle is a one of a kind work of art. Starting with the craftmanship that went into creating the beam 100+ years ago, ending with the modifications to make it that perfect fit for your project. All of our mantles are custom cut to your specifications from authentic, salvaged hewn beams. We carefully clean and hand sand each piece in order to maintain the rustic beauty, but remove those pesky slivers. We carry a large inventory of mantle quality beams in a variety of species, including those hard to find ones!

This white oak timber started as a 12″ x 12″ beam. The customer wanted the width, but not the bulky thickness. We split the beam on our band mill, sanded and finished the top smooth, and also shaved the back of the beam so it would fit flush with the wall. That, along with some tricky wire brush and sand paper work produced this mantle.

Finding vintage cherry hand hewn beams is one of the most difficult species to find. Believe it or not, this beam is unfinished besides a light coat of sealer. The contrasting patina of the heartwood and sapwood in reclaimed cherry is startling. The owners of this mantle wanted something out of the ordinary with a more refined look. This piece of cherry started as a 10″x10″ hewn beam. We cut 2″ of the top and also shaved the back to fit flush with the wall. To give the refined appearance, we worked the hewn surfaces down to a smooth sheen while still retaining the original makers ax marks.

I am preparing to have Luce’s brick a hearth and wondered what you have available in mantles or how they are priced. I need one approximately 62 inches or so. Are the beams able to be viewed?

I have hundreds of mantle quality beams you can look at at my yard. If you let me know the approximate size (6×6 to 12×12) you are looking for I can give you a better idea of the price.
